If you’re looking for family fun on the cheap (aka short driving distance from Manchester, Nashua, and vicinity), look no further than Canobie Lake Park. Having not been there since my own childhood, my impressions and memories were a bit foggy…….plus assumed depreciation over the years….. suffice to say I certainly didn’t have great expectations. But the toddler set is relatively easy to please and doing something rather than nothing always seems to make any weekend go better. Located in Salem, NH, only a 25 minute drive from our hometown of Amherst, NH, Canobie Lake is a little slice of nostalgia for those of us with southern NH roots. Even my mother-in-law remembers going on the caterpillar ride as a kid!
We went on a Sunday, arriving shortly after the gates opened at 11:00 and we figured things would probably get old by 1:00. However, we were amazed at the abundance of rides and entertainment. This is an ideal family fun park for many reasons in my book. First off, it’s very clean and attractive. The large trees and gardens help validate its vintage appeal. It actually feels like a park, a flowery, shady place to stroll around and enjoy the lake views. Whether that be from the sky tram or the patio of the Italian eatery (serving wine & beer) is up to you and your clan dynamic. Secondly, the rides are just right. No long lines, no death defying chancy stuff (like Six Flags for instance). Thrilling enough to get your adrenaline pumping, but low key enough that the dodgy crowd you see at other amusement parks seems to be absent………..they must be at those other parks! It’s like an old time Coney Island kind of amusement park………or at least how I’d imagine that to be. Third, we have 2 small kids (one almost 4, the other has just turned 2) so I didn’t know how many rides they’d qualify for height-wise, but happily there was no shortage of options (no pun intended). And kids 3 and under are free……….bonus! There is every variation of thingie to ride on going in a circle that you can imagine—all kinds of cars, fire trucks, boats in water, mini carousel, horse & buggy, etc. Then the ones that go up—swings, helicopters, rockets, flying dragons, etc. They’ve got mini versions of other rides in the park too—swings, carousel, roller coaster, bumper cars. There were also plenty of rides they could go on accompanied by an adult. The kids really weren’t denied passage on anything they seemed interested in checking out, no disappointments!
It was only when serious thunderstorms moved in around 2:30 that we decided we needed to leave, but intend to return again soon and check out some of the stuff we didn’t get to on this trip………...like the whole water park side. Once again, I’m happy to find another gem close to home!
