Amherst, New Hampshire is a picturesque town located in the heart of Hillsborough County, about 10 miles west of downtown Nashua, NH. With a population of a little over 10,000 citizens and an area of 34.8 square miles, Amherst has grown into a suburban community with many recent newcomers and is one of New Hampshire's most desirable places to live.
At one time a county seat, with a long colonial history, Amherst was an important part of New Hampshire commerce until the railroads bypassed the center of town in the 19th century. Many of the historic buildings in the Village of Amherst are well preserved and are the pride and joy of their residents. Fourth of July parades, lighting Christmas tree, and local band concerts still occur on the town common.
Many Amherst residents run small businesses in town, while others work in neighboring Manchester or Nashua, or even commute further south to jobs in Boston Massachussetts. On a good day the commute to Boston is approximately one hour and fifteen minutes.
A bit of Amherst history
Amherst, NH was first chartered in 1728 as Narragansett No. 3 and later called Souhegan No. 3.
In January, 1760 it was chartered as Amherst and named for General Jeffrey Amherst,
the commander-in-chief of the British forces in America at the time.
Eighteenth century Amherst was much larger than the present town.
By 1803, portions of Amherst had become the neighboring towns of Milford, Merrimack, and Mont Vernon.
Amherst became the first seat of Hillsborough County when the county was formed in 1769.
The central village contained the courthouse, complete with jail, pillory and whipping post.
By 1869, all county government had moved to either Manchester or Nashua. The
courthouse became the Town Hall and the jail was eventually removed.
Horace "Go West, young man" Greeley, founder of the New York Tribune and Republican and candidate for president
in 1872, was born in Amherst in 1811.
His house still stands on Horace Greeley Road.
